China have a announced a new ruling that limits one dog per household, similar to the one child ruling.
Shanghai is the latest city in China to introduce new laws on the ownership of dogs. Each household is to be allowed only one dog. But the ruling doesn`t stop there, Dogs larger than 3ft will be banned from the city centre, along with certain dog breeds. The new decision comes as a response to increasing dog attack reports. Last year there were an astonishing 140,000 reports of people being bitten by dogs and it was also reported that there is an increase in the numbers of deaths from being bitten by a rabid dog.
All dogs must also be registered, dogs not registered will be declared illegal in the ruling.
What does this mean for the dogs? It is estimated that this will affect over 600,000 dogs, the future of these is as yet unknown. Many will be put to sleep due to fear of rabies, dog shelters will be over run and many dogs will be immediately destroyed.
What are your thoughts on the ruling? Should poeple be educated better in ownership of dogs? Paris France was named the dog mess capital but responded with an education programme and it now much better.
This will be a nightmare to enforce and will most likely result in many many dogs being put to sleep. Re-education is the best option but China have a bad history with animals and I think educating people into better animal ownership just won`t happen
